Understand Medicare Advantage before you compare.
Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is a way to receive Medicare benefits through a Medicare-approved private plan. The coverage structure is different from Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement policy. Almond Insurance provides local guidance in Rockford for Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin residents who want to understand those differences before considering their options. This page explains questions to ask, not a list of plans currently available to you.
Two ways to receive Part A and Part B.
Original Medicare
With a Medicare Supplement policy
Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B.
A Medigap policy can help pay certain costs that remain your responsibility under that arrangement, according to the policy’s terms.
Prescription coverage needs its own discussion when considering Original Medicare with Medigap. Medicare.gov explains the option of adding a separate Part D drug plan. That drug plan has its own formulary, pharmacy arrangements, and coverage rules.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
A Medicare Advantage plan provides your Part A and Part B benefits through a private insurer rather than the Original Medicare arrangement.
Most plans also include Part D prescription coverage. The exact benefits, costs, and rules belong to the individual plan and must be checked in its current documents.
It does not replace Medicare, and it is not intended to pay Medicare Advantage cost-sharing.
Medicare Advantage and Medigap are not the same.

What Medicare Advantage means
A Medicare Advantage plan provides your Part A and Part B benefits through a private insurer rather than the Original Medicare arrangement. Most plans also include Part D prescription coverage. The exact benefits, costs, and rules belong to the individual plan and must be checked in its current documents.
A familiar carrier name does not establish that a particular plan serves your address or covers your doctor. Nor does an advertised extra benefit explain the whole coverage arrangement. Start with the plan’s structure and the care you use, then look at the additional features.
Networks, referrals, and care away from home
Many plans use provider networks. Ask whether each doctor, specialist, hospital, and other provider you use participates in the specific plan. Also ask how referrals, prior authorization, and non-emergency care outside the network work. Different plans can have different requirements.
If you travel or spend time in another state, discuss how routine care would work while you are away. Do not treat a general provider-directory listing as confirmation of coverage. Verify participation and relevant rules with both the provider and the plan.
Compare costs, not just a premium
A coverage review should consider premiums, deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, drug costs, and applicable out-of-pocket rules. Ask where each category appears in the plan documents. The cost of using coverage can matter as much as the price of having it.
A website estimate cannot predict your future healthcare needs or guarantee your total spending. Compare the current official documents and ask questions about services you use regularly. Any plan-specific figure or benefit needs separate verification; this page does not publish local prices or promise savings.
Check prescriptions and existing insurance
When a plan includes drug coverage, review the formulary, pharmacy participation, and any restrictions for your prescriptions. Do not assume that a medicine is covered the same way because a plan shares a carrier with your current coverage.
If you have employer, retiree, union, or other insurance, ask how a Medicare Advantage enrollment would affect it. Do not add a separate drug plan without checking the rules for the exact coverage arrangement. Confirm any enrollment opportunity and effective date before making a change.
Questions for a Medicare Advantage conversation
- Does the exact plan include the providers I want to use?
- What rules apply to referrals and prior authorization?
- How are my prescriptions and preferred pharmacies handled?
- What costs could apply when I receive care?
- How would this arrangement affect my other insurance or travel?
Questions about Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Is Medicare Advantage the same as Medigap?
No. Medicare Advantage is a private-plan way to receive Medicare benefits. Medigap supplements Original Medicare by helping with certain cost-sharing expenses. Medigap is not designed to cover Medicare Advantage out-of-pocket costs.
Do all Medicare Advantage plans include drug coverage?
Most include drug coverage, but you need to check the specific plan. Do not assume you can add a stand-alone Part D plan without consequences; verify the coordination rules for the coverage involved.
Can I keep every doctor I see now?
That cannot be promised by a general page. Participation depends on the provider and the exact plan. Confirm current details directly with both before making a decision, including any referral or authorization requirements.
Does this page show all plans available in Rockford?
No. It provides general education and is not a complete local plan catalog. See the existing disclosure below and consult Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your State Health Insurance Assistance Program for information on all options.
