Help comparing Medicare Advantage and Medigap.
Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement insurance are different approaches to coverage, not two versions of the same policy. Almond Insurance offers comparison guidance from our Rockford office for people across Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. Our role is to help you understand the structure, organize your priorities, and ask useful questions—not to declare one coverage path best for everyone.

Start with your questions.
Explore these guidance topics at your own pace. The numbering organizes the reading, not required enrollment steps.
Compare the coverage structure first.
Medicare Advantage is a private-plan way to receive Medicare benefits. Medigap is supplemental insurance used with Original Medicare to help with certain cost-sharing expenses. A Medigap policy is not designed to pay the out-of-pocket costs of a Medicare Advantage plan.
That difference affects what you compare. For Advantage, examine the individual plan’s rules, network, costs, and drug coverage. For Original Medicare with Medigap, examine the supplement’s benefits, premium, enrollment considerations, and any separate prescription coverage. Comparing a single feature without the surrounding coverage can leave important questions unanswered.
Make doctors and access part of the conversation.
List the doctors, specialists, hospitals, and other providers you want to discuss. Participation can vary by the specific plan and location. Ask both the provider and the plan to confirm details rather than relying on a directory entry, a familiar carrier name, or information from a previous year.
If you travel or spend part of the year away from home, ask how routine and non-emergency care works in the places you visit. Network rules, referrals, and prior authorization requirements need to be understood for the actual coverage being considered, not assumed from a general comparison.
Look beyond the monthly premium.
A useful comparison includes deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, prescription expenses, and applicable out-of-pocket rules as well as premiums. Consider the services you regularly use and questions about an unexpected medical need. A lower premium does not, by itself, establish the lowest total cost for a person.
We can help you identify which cost categories to look for in current documents. We do not use a website estimate to guarantee what you will spend, and we do not infer current benefits or availability from the logos shown on the site.
Include prescriptions and switching questions.
Many Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy generally needs a separate discussion of Part D coverage. The correct arrangement depends on the coverage involved; adding a stand-alone drug plan without checking coordination rules can have consequences.
If you already have coverage, ask about both the opportunity to make a change and the requirements for the coverage you want next. Medigap purchase protections and underwriting questions are not the same as annual Medicare plan-change rules. Do not cancel an existing policy before confirming the next coverage and its effective date.
Bring priorities, not just plan names
- Doctors and facilities whose participation you want confirmed.
- Current prescription and pharmacy questions for a private conversation.
- Travel or seasonal-residence considerations.
- Current coverage documents and any change notices.
- The costs and coverage rules you would like explained.

Questions about Medicare Advantage & Supplement comparison
Is Medicare Advantage better than Medicare Supplement?
There is no universal answer. They have different coverage structures and considerations. A useful discussion starts with your current coverage, providers, prescriptions, priorities, and the rules for available options rather than a general ranking.
Can I use Medigap with Medicare Advantage?
Medigap is designed to supplement Original Medicare, not Medicare Advantage. If you are thinking about changing your coverage path, confirm the relevant enrollment and policy-purchase requirements before making a change.
Will a provider directory prove my doctor is covered?
No. A local directory listing is not proof of Medicare acceptance or participation in a specific insurance network. Confirm current participation with the provider and the exact plan you are considering.
Can I switch coverage whenever I want?
Enrollment opportunities depend on the coverage and your situation. The ability to leave one arrangement does not automatically establish the ability to buy another. Check official rules and any policy requirements before acting.
