Understand Medicare Supplement coverage.
Medicare Supplement insurance, often called Medigap, works alongside Original Medicare to help with certain out-of-pocket costs. It is different from Medicare Advantage and has its own policy-purchase considerations. Almond Insurance offers guidance from our Rockford office for people in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin who want to understand this coverage path. Availability, prices, and purchase rights must be checked for your circumstances and state.
How Medicare Supplement fits with Original Medicare.
Original Medicare
With a Medicare Supplement policy
Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B.
A Medigap policy can help pay certain costs that remain your responsibility under that arrangement, according to the policy’s terms.
Prescription coverage needs its own discussion when considering Original Medicare with Medigap. Medicare.gov explains the option of adding a separate Part D drug plan. That drug plan has its own formulary, pharmacy arrangements, and coverage rules.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
A Medicare Advantage plan provides your Part A and Part B benefits through a private insurer rather than the Original Medicare arrangement.
Most plans also include Part D prescription coverage. The exact benefits, costs, and rules belong to the individual plan and must be checked in its current documents.
It does not replace Medicare, and it is not intended to pay Medicare Advantage cost-sharing.
Medicare Advantage and Medigap are not the same.

Ask which costs a policy addresses and which it does not. A description such as “supplemental” does not mean every medical expense is covered. Read the actual benefit information and exclusions rather than assuming that the name of a policy explains its full scope.
Separate supplement benefits from drug coverage.
Prescription coverage needs its own discussion when considering Original Medicare with Medigap. Medicare.gov explains the option of adding a separate Part D drug plan. That drug plan has its own formulary, pharmacy arrangements, and coverage rules.
A Medigap comparison alone does not answer whether a particular prescription is covered or what it will cost. Include medication and pharmacy questions in the overall review, and ask how the intended arrangement coordinates with any other insurance you already have.
Check state rules and policy details.
Medigap policies are standardized in most states, but not every state uses the same approach. Wisconsin has a different standardization system from states that use the common lettered-plan structure. Because Almond serves people on both sides of the Illinois–Wisconsin border, your state is an important starting point.
Do not assume that a plan letter discussed in a national article is the correct way to compare coverage in your state. Consult Medicare.gov and the relevant state insurance department, and verify the policy being considered. This page does not claim that Almond offers any particular lettered plan.
Understand purchase timing before switching.
Medigap open enrollment and other purchase protections have different rules from annual Medicare Advantage or Part D plan-change opportunities. Outside applicable protections, medical underwriting or other requirements may affect whether a policy can be bought and at what cost.
Ask about your situation before leaving existing coverage or assuming that you can return to it later. A website calculator cannot establish your policy-purchase rights. Confirm eligibility, acceptance, coverage coordination, and intended effective dates with the appropriate official sources and insurer.
Prepare for a Medigap discussion
- Your state of residence and current Medicare coverage.
- Questions about the costs a supplement does and does not address.
- Any existing employer, retiree, or other insurance.
- Questions about separate prescription coverage.
- Any notices or dates relevant to buying or replacing a policy.
Questions about Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Is Medicare Supplement another name for Medicare Advantage?
No. A Medicare Supplement policy works alongside Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage is a different way to receive Medicare benefits. Comparing them requires looking at the entire arrangement, not treating them as interchangeable policies.
Does a new Medigap policy provide prescription coverage?
Prescription coverage is a separate consideration in the Original Medicare and Medigap arrangement. Discuss Part D and any existing drug coverage rather than assuming that a supplement covers your medicines.
Are Illinois and Wisconsin Medigap policies compared the same way?
Not necessarily. Wisconsin uses a different standardization system. Check the state-specific rules and actual policy documents rather than applying a national lettered-plan comparison automatically to both states.
Can I buy a Medigap policy during any annual enrollment period?
An annual Medicare plan-change opportunity does not automatically establish a Medigap purchase right. Your age, Medicare timing, state rules, existing coverage, and other circumstances may matter. Verify the requirements before acting.
